New Richmond is a growing city with lots to offer. When driving down Knowles Ave, you can see several big retail stores as well as smaller locally owned businesses. There’s also a large community nearby in well-maintained neighborhoods.
The first settlement was established in 1857 by Hiram Foster. It was an ideal location to set up a sawmill on the Willow River as the area was abundant with trees. Other settlers from New England also came to the area and put down roots. For the first several years, the area was called Foster’s Crossing. Later, the name was changed to New Richmond in honor of Richmond Day, the man who originally plotted the town.
In 1871, the railroad came to town. A railroad station was set up with lines to St Paul and Chicago as part of the Omaha X network. Later on in 1885, another line was added to the north side of town that ran to Stillwater, MN. This helped increase the influx of settlers to the area, helping the area to develop a booming economy.
